ABOUT

Powell House Project Inc (PHP) is a non-profit youth development organization committed to strengthening the lives of Washington, D.C. youth and young adults through academic enrichment, career development, professional skills and employment readiness training. Our principle emphasis is to help foster and develop strong personal values, promote the concept of teamwork, encourage a commitment to community, cultivate a standard of academic excellence and employability through mentoring, apprenticeship, and media arts programming.

PHP offers year-round academic support and work-readiness programming for youth, ages 14-24. We assist participants in fulfill their educational goals and explore the world of work by providing educational support, career development, employment readiness training, internships, and paid job placements with one of our business consortium partners.

School Year Program

PHP’s School Year Program focuses on youths’ academic needs to help them graduate from high school and identify post-secondary plans. Each PHP participant works with a Youth Development Counselor to develop a plan to achieve academic, personal and employment goals. The program supports participants’ ability to meet these goals by providing after-school tutoring, job readiness training, career exploration, financial literacy, field trips, internships and case management.

The PHP program is open to students enrolled in DC Public School system, and DC residents that meet the income and eligibility criteria. For more detailed information about eligibility, call 202-527-4014 or e-mail info@powellhouseproject.org

Summer Internship Program

During the summer, PHP places youth in paid internships to develop work readiness skills (i.e. showing up for work on time, proper work attire, communication skills, etc.) and provide exposure to the world of work. Internships take place in a range of technology sectors businesses. Youth are provided with case management support and mentorship at their internships sites.

Eligibility criteria and number of slots available for the Summer Internship Program vary each year.

Summer Internship Program - Applications are available starting in March of each year. Spaces are filled on a space available basis. Youth are encouraged to apply early.  Once spaces are filled, eligible youth with a complete application are placed on a waiting list. Youth are moved from the waiting list as space becomes available.

Where to get an application?

Applications are available for pick-up at our N.E. office. PHP is located at 2634 12th Street NE, Washington, DC 20018. The office is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We regret that applications cannot be mailed, faxed or made available online.


Employment Partners

The Powell House Project Program is also the lead agency to a consortium of businesses which includes partners:  PHN Network, House Studio DC, and Kimshimwon. This provides youth with access to employment readiness training, higher education opportunities, and professional skills needed to progress in well-paying technology based careers.
